Celebrate the Lunar New Year in style by creating these fun and easy paper lanterns. What is the Lunar New Year? Traditionally celebrated in Chinese and Asian cultures, the Lunar New Year marks the beginning of the year based on cycles of the moon, and the lanterns are used to light up the winter night. Celebrating culture and working together to create something is always an enriching, rewarding way to spend time with one another!
Fold the red construction paper in half longways so that you have a long rectangle.
Using a ruler as a guide, draw a line across the top of the paper, just under an inch from the open end. Then draw a series of lines from the closed end to the line.
Cut along the lines. Your lines don’t have to be exact so you can freehand the cuts instead of drawing lines.
Open the paper and fold the long ends so they touch, giving the lantern its cylindrical shape.
Use tape, glue or a stapler, join the ends together and close your lantern.
Cut two long strips of yellow paper and attach one at each end of your lantern.
Optional: Place a small electric candle on the table and put your lantern over top of it to light it up.
Optional: Cut a long strip of construction paper and secure inside one end of your lantern to hang them as decorations.
